Raw Herkimer Diamond 1.2g — Sparkling NY Quartz Crystal

A fuller bodied Herkimer Diamond at 1.2g, roughly 8 to 10mm across and 13 to 14mm tall, with the kind of chunky, well proportioned build that photographs badly and looks wonderful in the hand. Clarity is high, the sparkle is genuinely eye catching, and both ends finish in complete double terminations. It has a bit more heft than the miniature grades without losing any of their brightness.

If it is described as raw, why does it already look faceted? This trips up almost everyone, and the answer is the nicest thing about Herkimers. Raw here means untouched, not unshaped. The facets, the points, the flat mirror faces all formed underground with no human involvement, so the crystal arrives looking cut without ever having been near a wheel. That is precisely what makes it worth having. Traditionally it is used for mental clarity, intention setting, and amplification, working with the crown and third eye chakras.

A closer look

These are quartz from Herkimer County, New York, nicknamed diamonds purely for their brilliance. Around 500 million years ago a shallow sea deposited carbonate sediments that hardened into the Little Falls dolostone. Acidic groundwater dissolved cavities into that rock, silica rich fluid worked in, and quartz crystallized inside those sealed pockets slowly, suspended and hardly touching the walls. With neither end anchored, a full set of faces grew on both, roughly eighteen across the whole crystal. Ordinary quartz always attaches at one end, which is why a natural double point is worth remarking on.

Living with your Herkimer Diamond

The stockier build makes this a good statement stone for a wire wrap, where a slim crystal can disappear into the setting. It also carries well, sits comfortably between finger and thumb, and works nicely as the centre of a small grid. Each is chosen from a natural batch, so expect small differences from the photographs. Quartz is hard and water safe, so rinse and dry on a soft cloth. Keep it apart from harder gems in storage so the faces stay clean and the points stay sharp.
