Herkimer Diamond 42mm — Long Double Terminated NY Quartz

An unusually long Herkimer Diamond, 42mm from point to point but only 18mm across, which gives it a slim, elegant profile quite unlike the stubby crystals the locality usually produces. Why are some Herkimers long and others chunky? It has to do with the shape of the cavity each one grew in and how much room it had. A crystal in a generous, roughly round pocket fills out evenly. One growing in a narrow seam elongates along its natural axis instead, which is what happened here. Herkimers are traditionally linked to clarity, focus, and amplification, working with the crown and third eye chakras, and an elongated crystal is a favourite among people who like a wand shape to hold or to direct along a line.

A closer look

Herkimers are quartz rather than diamond, nicknamed for their brilliance and named for the county in upstate New York where the genuine article comes from. The geology is worth a moment. Around 500 million years ago a shallow sea laid down the carbonate sediments that became the Little Falls dolostone. Acidic groundwater dissolved cavities into that rock, silica rich fluid found its way in, and quartz crystallized inside those sealed pockets very slowly with barely any contact with the walls. That freedom is why terminations formed at both ends rather than one, and why nothing here has been cut or shaped by hand.

Living with your Herkimer Diamond

The long shape makes it comfortable to hold lengthwise between finger and thumb, which is why elongated crystals often end up used as small wands, traced along the body or held during focused intention work. Standing it upright on a shelf shows the proportions off best. Quartz is hard and unbothered by water, so rinse and dry on a soft cloth. Because it is slender for its length, treat it a little more carefully than a stubby crystal, and avoid resting weight across the middle.
