Herkimer Diamond 10mm — Tiny Clear NY Quartz for Jewellery

A tiny Herkimer Diamond with outsized brilliance, 10mm tall and under half a gram, water clear and sharply faceted at both ends. At this scale the clarity is what carries it, and this one is exceptionally clean, throwing light with the crispness of a cut stone despite never having met a wheel. The double terminations are complete and well defined, which is exactly why small Herkimers are so popular with jewellery makers.

Can you really set a stone this small? Very easily, and that is rather the point. A double terminated crystal gives a wire wrapper two natural anchor points, so it can be bound securely without drilling, and at 7 by 10mm it sits comfortably as a pendant or a stacked ring accent without overwhelming a design. Left unset it makes a fine pocket stone. Herkimers are traditionally linked to clarity, attunement, and amplification, working with the crown and third eye chakras.

A closer look

These crystals are quartz, called diamonds only for their brilliance, and they come from Herkimer County, New York. The formation runs back roughly 500 million years, to a shallow sea whose carbonate sediments hardened into the Little Falls dolostone. Acidic groundwater dissolved cavities into that rock, silica rich fluid seeped in, and quartz crystallized inside those sealed pockets slowly and almost free floating. Nothing anchored either end, so a complete set of faces formed on both. Small crystals often show this best, because a shorter growth run tends to mean fewer trapped impurities and cleaner glass.

Living with your Herkimer Diamond

Wrap it, carry it, or tuck it somewhere you will find it unexpectedly. Small clear Herkimers are also a favourite for grid work, where several can be placed at the points around a larger centre stone. Because these are chosen from a natural batch, yours will vary a little in outline from the photographs. Quartz is hard and water safe, so a rinse and a soft cloth restores the shine. Store it in its own pouch rather than loose with other stones, since a crystal this clean shows every scratch it picks up.
