Do inclusions make a Herkimer less valuable? For gem cutters, yes. For collectors and for anyone who actually likes looking at a stone, not really. Those inclusions are the trapped record of the pocket this crystal grew in, sometimes carbon, sometimes fluid, and a flawless crystal tells you far less about where it came from. Herkimers are traditionally associated with clarity, attunement, and amplification, working with the crown and third eye chakras, and a piece with this much mass makes a natural anchor for a shelf or an altar.

A closer look

These are quartz, not diamonds, nicknamed for their brilliance and named for Herkimer County in upstate New York. Their story begins roughly 500 million years ago, when a shallow sea deposited the carbonate sediments that hardened into the Little Falls dolostone. Acidic groundwater later dissolved cavities into that rock, silica rich fluid crept in, and quartz crystallized inside those sealed pockets very slowly, suspended and hardly touching the walls. Free at both ends, it grew a full termination on each. In a specimen this large, that unimpeded growth is even more remarkable, since the pocket had to stay open and stable for a very long time.

Living with your Herkimer Diamond

Give it a surface rather than a pocket. It has the weight and presence to hold a shelf, a desk, or the centre of a grid, and it sits comfortably in a cupped hand for longer meditation where a small stone would disappear. Try it near a lamp or a window and watch how the inclusions shift as you turn it. Quartz is hard and water safe, so a rinse and a soft cloth is all it needs. Set it down gently on hard surfaces, since the terminations are the first thing to chip.
