Tsumeb Dioptase 28mm — Crystal Encrusted Face, Namibia

A small Tsumeb dioptase specimen, 28mm and 6.5g, its front face entirely encrusted in dense emerald green crystals, creating a continuous jewel like surface despite the compact size.

What is actually happening optically when dioptase throws those bright internal flashes as it turns? It comes back to the mineral's name and its defining feature, perfect cleavage in three separate directions. Each cleavage plane acts like a tiny internal mirror, and where several planes sit close together across a densely crystallized surface like this one, the effect compounds, producing the layered, glassy brilliance dioptase is known for. Glass imitations lack this cleavage entirely and cannot reproduce the effect. Dioptase is traditionally associated with emotional clarity and heart centred renewal.

A closer look

This piece was mined at the Tsumeb Mine in Namibia's Otjikoto Region between 1998 and 2006, the final years of production from one of the most celebrated mineral localities in history. A fully encrusted face like this, where the crystal coverage is dense and uniform rather than scattered, represents one of the more visually striking presentations dioptase can take.
