Tsumeb Dioptase 40mm — Large Crystal, Namibia

A Tsumeb dioptase specimen, 40mm and 24.8g, featuring a notably large, well formed crystal rising from the matrix with genuinely gem like transparency and saturated colour.

Is Tsumeb actually where dioptase was first discovered? It is a common assumption, given how strongly the two are associated, but the honest answer is no. The species was first identified in the Altyn Tyube deposit in southern Kazakhstan, which holds the official type locality distinction. Tsumeb's reputation rests instead on the quality of what it produced, exceptionally large, gem clear crystals with a depth of colour that set the benchmark for the entire species, even though the mineral itself was named and described elsewhere first. Dioptase is traditionally linked to heart centred awareness and emotional renewal.

A closer look

This crystal was mined between 1998 and 2006, part of the final production era before Tsumeb closed permanently. Its size and clarity give it a sculptural quality against the host matrix, the kind of well individuated crystal form that distinguishes a genuinely fine specimen from denser, less defined crystal growth.
