Does etching make a crystal less valuable? Collectors would say the opposite. Etched faces record something about the chemistry of the pocket the crystal formed in, which is why specimens like this often end up more prized than flawless ones. Herkimers are traditionally linked to clarity, attunement, and amplification, working with the crown and third eye chakras, and the mix of polished brilliance and raw texture here suits people who want a crystal that still looks like it came out of the ground.

A closer look

These crystals are not diamonds at all, which surprises a lot of first time buyers. They are quartz, and the name came from their brilliance and from Herkimer County in upstate New York. The geology behind them is genuinely lovely. Roughly 500 million years ago a shallow sea deposited the sediments that became the Little Falls dolostone. Acidic groundwater ate cavities into that rock, silica rich fluid seeped in, and quartz grew inside those pockets almost free floating, hardly touching the walls at all. That is why both ends came to points, and why the faces you see were shaped entirely underground.

Living with your Herkimer Diamond

Turn it so the etched end faces the light and you will see how differently the two terminations behave, one throwing sharp flashes and the other holding a soft glow. It is a good crystal to hold during meditation, to keep on a writing desk, or to place at the centre of a grid. Quartz is hard and water safe, so a rinse and a soft cloth is enough, though it is worth avoiding stiff brushes on the etched face since that texture is the whole point of the piece. Keep it away from harder surfaces so the terminations stay crisp.
