Herkimer Diamonds are not diamonds. They are quartz, and they earned the nickname from their brilliance and from Herkimer County, New York, where they turned up in quantity during excavations in the late 1700s. The formation story is the part collectors love. Around 500 million years ago a shallow sea laid down the sediments that became the Little Falls dolostone. Acidic water hollowed cavities into it, silica rich fluid seeped in, and quartz crystallized inside those pockets while barely touching the walls. Free on all sides, it grew points at both ends. Only stones from that county are true Herkimers, and this one is.
