Crystals with visible internal features, like this one, trade some of that sparkle for character and depth, and many collectors prefer them precisely because the inclusions are evidence of where the crystal grew. A closer look

Despite the nickname these are quartz, and the double point is a geological accident of the luckiest kind. Roughly 500 million years ago a shallow sea deposited the carbonate sediments that became the Little Falls dolostone. Acidic groundwater dissolved cavities into that rock, silica rich fluid entered, and quartz crystallized inside those pockets slowly and almost free floating. Because nothing held either end, a full termination formed on both. A crystal of this bulk needed a generous pocket that stayed open and chemically stable for a very long time, which is part of why heavier specimens command what they do.

Living with your Herkimer Diamond

The weight is the pleasure here. It fills a palm properly, which makes it well suited to longer meditation where a lighter stone stops registering, and it has enough presence to hold a shelf or a desk corner on its own. Stand it upright and let a lamp or a window do the work. Quartz is hard and takes water without complaint, so a rinse and a soft cloth is the whole routine.
