Herkimer Diamond 13mm — Elongated Clear NY Quartz Point

Do Herkimers need cleansing the way softer crystals do? Practically speaking, no. Quartz is hard and chemically stable, so unlike selenite or malachite it takes water without any risk, and a rinse under the tap is a perfectly good physical clean. If cleansing matters to you energetically, most people simply leave a Herkimer in moonlight or beside a cluster overnight. There is nothing here that salt, water, or sunlight will damage. A closer look

The name is a nickname. This is quartz from Herkimer County, New York, called a diamond for its brilliance and nothing else. Its shape goes back roughly 500 million years, to a shallow sea that laid down the carbonate sediments now known as the Little Falls dolostone. Acidic groundwater dissolved cavities into that rock, silica rich fluid crept in, and quartz crystallized inside those sealed pockets slowly and nearly free floating. Because neither end was fused to anything, both grew full terminations. An elongated crystal like this one usually means it grew in a narrower seam rather than a rounded pocket.

Living with your Herkimer Diamond

The long shape suits a pendant particularly well, since it hangs naturally and a wrapper has plenty of length to work with. Unset, it is comfortable held upright between finger and thumb during focused intention work, and it slips easily into a pocket. Yours will differ slightly from the photographs in outline, as these are natural crystals selected from a batch. Rinse and dry on a soft cloth whenever it dulls. Keep it stored on its own, because clean quartz picks up marks from harder stones.
