Why would a naturally hard, stable mineral like quartz develop internal fractures at all? It usually comes down to stress the crystal experienced long after it finished growing, minor seismic movement, temperature swings deep underground, or pressure shifts as surrounding rock settled over millions of years. Quartz is hard, sitting at 7 on the Mohs scale, but hardness and resistance to internal stress fracturing are not quite the same property, which is exactly how these fine internal cracks come to exist inside an otherwise solid crystal. A closer look

Once a fracture exists inside the crystal, it behaves like a thin, angled mirror to light passing through, splitting it into colour exactly the way a prism does. Because the fracture's angle and position are entirely a product of chance, the rainbow in this sphere shows itself only from specific viewing angles rather than uniformly across the whole surface.
