Where does the brown come from? Iron. Obsidian is volcanic glass, and when iron oxide, mostly hematite, is caught up in the melt and distributed unevenly through it, the result is these rusty red-brown patches swirled through the black. Nothing is dyed or heat-treated. The unevenness is precisely why no two pieces pattern alike, and why a sphere shows the effect so well, since the swirls wrap continuously around the whole surface.
