Why does the trade sometimes use "cat's eye" loosely across genuinely different stones? In gemology, the unqualified name "cat's eye" technically belongs to chrysoberyl, a far rarer and more valuable gem, while any other chatoyant stone needs a species name attached, hence "cat's-eye quartz" specifically. Within the trade this distinction isn't always made carefully, and confirming exactly which fibrous mineral is producing the effect in a given piece genuinely requires close examination. This piece is traditionally associated with the third eye and throat chakras, linked to clear thinking, sound judgement, and honest communication.

A closer look

The chatoyancy here comes from densely packed, parallel fibrous inclusions within the quartz, most often crocidolite or a related amphibole mineral, oriented so light reflects off them as a single moving line rather than scattering randomly. Cat's-eye quartz is genuinely one of the more accessible chatoyant stones in the trade, occurring across a range of body colours from white through grey, green, yellow, and brown.
