Tiger eye carved into a magatama is a lovely pairing, because the stone and the shape are both about strength you can hold in your hand. This one measures 50 x 27 x 15 mm, polished into the classic comma curve, and the moment you tilt it the surface comes alive with silky golden bands that seem to roll across the stone. That movement has a name, chatoyancy, and it's the whole reason people have kept tiger eye close for centuries.

So what exactly is a magatama? It's a curved, comma shaped bead that appeared in prehistoric Japan and stayed in use from the late Jōmon period through the Kofun era, worn as an amulet and often buried with the person who owned it. There's a detail in the language worth knowing: the Japanese word for jewel, tama, sounds the same as the word for soul. Coincidence or not, it tells you how these small carvings were regarded. They weren't decoration so much as something personal you carried.

A closer look

The gold in tiger eye wasn't always gold. It began as blue grey fibres locked inside rock, and over an enormous stretch of time quartz replaced those fibres while keeping their exact parallel alignment. The iron left behind oxidised, which is where the warm amber and honey tones come from. Because every fibre runs the same direction, light bounces back as one moving band, so a piece like this always looks better in the hand than in a photograph. Tiger eye is traditionally a solar plexus stone, tied to confidence, focus and courage, with a steadying pull toward the root chakra as well.

Living with your tiger eye magatama

It's sized to work as a bold focal stone for a wire wrapped piece, a collector's carving on a shelf, or simply something to hold while you think. A lot of people keep tiger eye on a desk for exactly that last reason, somewhere in reach before a hard decision. Caring for it is easy since tiger eye is a hard stone at around 7 on the Mohs scale. A quick rinse and a soft cloth is plenty, though it's better not to leave it soaking, and months of harsh direct sunlight can dull that golden colour over time.

Please note: crystals are not a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Keep small pieces away from young children.
