Star Rose Quartz Rough 20mm — Madagascar Cabbing Gem

This is lapidary rough rather than a finished piece, and it is worth being clear about that from the start. Each is a tumble polished lump of star rose quartz from Madagascar, roughly 20 mm across with a generous 15 to 18 mm of depth, sold per piece. The tumbling leaves smooth flat sides, which is exactly what you want for judging clarity and finding your axis before the saw comes out, but it also means what arrives is raw material with the best part still locked inside it.

Will the star show on the rough as it is? No, and this is the thing to understand before buying. Asterism needs a curved surface to gather and focus light into rays, so a flat sided piece simply cannot produce one. Cut and polish it into a rounded dome, a puffed round or a double sided heart, and the six ray star appears. In rose quartz the effect is diasterism, meaning it shows in transmitted light, so you see the star by shining a concentrated point light through the back of the finished cabochon rather than from the front.

Working with this rough

The star comes from microscopic fibrous inclusions threaded through the quartz in a repeating orientation, the same inclusions responsible for rose quartz's pink in the first place. Because they align to the crystal's optical axis, orientation is everything. Wet the rough, backlight it with a single point source, and look for where the light gathers and organises. Cut so that the dome of your cabochon sits perpendicular to that axis, and the star lands centred. Get it wrong by much and you get a lopsided or absent star from material that was perfectly good. The generous depth here is deliberate, giving you room to cut a properly puffed double sided shape rather than a shallow dome that swallows the effect.

What else you can do with it

Cabbing is the obvious route, but the cleaner sections face well for anyone who prefers faceting, and plenty of people skip the workshop entirely and wire wrap the tumbled form as a raw focal pendant. Rose quartz stays the heart stone whatever you do with it, tied to compassion and self acceptance, and the star variety is often treated as a focused version of that, an anchor point rather than a diffuse glow. One care note that carries into the finished piece: rose quartz fades under sustained ultraviolet light, so keep it out of long direct sun.
