Why does the number of eyes on a Dzi bead matter so much to how it's read? Within the Tibetan tradition, the circular eye motifs are a genuine symbolic vocabulary, and the count changes the bead's meaning entirely rather than simply adding more of the same. A two eye Dzi is specifically read as a symbol of harmony and union, traditionally associated with partnership and balanced relationships, distinct from a single eye or the higher counts like three or nine, which carry entirely different associations tied to Buddhist teaching and protection. Genuine Dzi beads are traditionally worn as protective amulets and treasured as family heirlooms.

A closer look

The pattern here comes from an etching and dyeing process rather than sculptural carving, agate masked and treated with an alkaline solution, then heat set to darken the exposed surface before the mask is lifted to reveal the lighter eye motifs beneath. Agate is a banded chalcedony, hard at 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, which is part of why these patterns have survived intact for so long.
