Why does tiger's eye have that moving band of light across it? The effect is called chatoyancy, and it comes from fine parallel fibres running through the stone, the same optical principle behind the shimmer in certain silks. Traditionally this was explained as quartz slowly replacing fibrous blue asbestos, though more recent mineralogical study has questioned that account and proposed the fibres grow through a different crack-and-heal process instead. Either way, the golden-brown colour comes from iron oxide within those fibres, and it's entirely natural.
