Without a metal setting protecting the edges, the whole ring is exposed stone, so the tiger's eye itself has to do all the work of surviving daily contact rather than being cushioned by a claw or bezel. That's part of why tiger's eye specifically suits this kind of carving, its hardness and chatoyant fibrous structure hold up to direct wear far better than a softer or more brittle stone would in the same design. A closer look

The golden brown shimmer running across the dome comes from fine crocidolite fibres gradually replaced by silica and iron oxide, a process called pseudomorphism, and the dome shape is cut so those fibres run parallel to the surface, which is what lets the chatoyant band move as the ring catches light from different angles.
