Magatama Talisman — Black Tourmaline & Malachite

This magatama carving replicates the curved, comma-like shapes first found at Japan's ancient Jōmon period excavation sites, dating as far back as 14,000 BC, and still revered today as part of the Imperial Regalia of Japan. It is available in a wide range of natural stones, including black tourmaline, malachite, bloodstone, and over a dozen others such as sodalite, labradorite, carnelian, hematite, tiger eye, and rose quartz, each carrying its own metaphysical reputation alongside the shared symbolism of the form.

So what does each stone add? Black tourmaline is widely reached for as a protective, grounding stone. Malachite, with its swirling green bands, is known as the Stone of Transformation, tied to the heart chakra and emotional change. Bloodstone carries a long reputation for courage and vitality. All three sit comfortably within the magatama's traditional role as a good fortune charm, and choosing between them often comes down to which particular quality you want to lean into most.

Caring for your Magatama

Malachite in particular is a softer stone that reacts poorly to water, so keep any malachite piece dry and clean it only with a soft, dry cloth. Store your magatama in a pouch away from harder objects, and keep it out of prolonged direct sunlight to protect its colour, especially if you have chosen the malachite version.
