Most beaded bracelets whisper. This one doesn't. Built from 14 mm round lapis lazuli beads, it sits heavy and deliberate on the wrist, and the scale is the whole point: at this bead size the deep royal blue reads across a room rather than disappearing under a shirt cuff. Lapis is the classic stone of truth, wisdom and clear communication, tied to the throat and third eye chakras, so there's a pleasing logic to wearing it somewhere people notice.
Why does lapis vary so wildly in price when it all looks blue in a photograph? Because lapis is a rock rather than a single mineral, and the proportions decide everything. The blue comes from lazurite. The chalky white streaks are calcite, and the more of it there is, the paler and cheaper the material. The gold glints are pyrite. Strong, saturated blue with pyrite scattered through it and very little white is the top of the market, and finding that consistently across beads this large is much harder than finding it in a small cabochon, since every bead has to match the next one.
A closer look
Lapis has possibly the best documented history of any stone people collect, which is unusual in a field where a lot of the lore is modern invention. It turned up in Tutankhamun's burial mask and in Mesopotamian seals, and by the Renaissance it was being ground into ultramarine, a pigment so costly that painters saved it for the Virgin's robes. The source barely changed across all of that time: the mountains of Badakhshan in Afghanistan, where the Sar-e-Sang mines have been worked for thousands of years. Any lapis you own is part of a very long story.

Wearing your lapis bracelet
Lapis is softer than the quartz bracelets most people are used to, sitting around 5 to 5.5 on the Mohs scale, and it's mildly porous, so a few habits will keep it looking new. Take it off before showering, swimming or washing up, since prolonged water gets into the stone and dulls the polish. Put it on after perfume, lotion and sunscreen rather than before. Clean it with a dry or barely damp soft cloth, never a chemical cleaner, and store it separately so harder beads can't scratch the surface. Treated gently, a piece like this outlasts most jewellery in a drawer.
Please note: crystals are not a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Keep small pieces away from young children.
