Lapis Lazuli Bracelet 14mm — Bold Blue Statement Beads

Why does lapis vary so wildly in price when it all looks blue in a photograph? Because lapis is a rock rather than a single mineral, and the proportions decide everything. The blue comes from lazurite. The chalky white streaks are calcite, and the more of it there is, the paler and cheaper the material. The gold glints are pyrite. Strong, saturated blue with pyrite scattered through it and very little white is the top of the market, and finding that consistently across beads this large is much harder than finding it in a small cabochon, since every bead has to match the next one.

Wearing your lapis bracelet

Lapis is softer than the quartz bracelets most people are used to, sitting around 5 to 5.5 on the Mohs scale, and it's mildly porous, so a few habits will keep it looking new. Take it off before showering, swimming or washing up, since prolonged water gets into the stone and dulls the polish. Put it on after perfume, lotion and sunscreen rather than before. Clean it with a dry or barely damp soft cloth, never a chemical cleaner, and store it separately so harder beads can't scratch the surface. Treated gently, a piece like this outlasts most jewellery in a drawer.
