Himalayan Quartz forms within pegmatite pockets shaped by the ongoing collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, among the most geologically active mountain building anywhere on the planet. Collection happens only during a narrow window each year, when the snow line briefly recedes enough to expose these pockets at elevations often above 5,000 metres. The iron oxide staining this specimen's surface formed naturally alongside the quartz during that same process.
