Why does Faden quartz usually grow flat rather than in the classic pointed shape most quartz takes? It comes down to where growth happens fastest. Faden crystals develop parallel to the walls of a widening fissure, and because growth along the crystal's length happens more quickly than growth outward from its faces, the result is a thin, tabular, plate-like form rather than a traditional prism. The thread itself runs along that same length, visible as a cloudy white seam through the clearer body. Faden quartz is traditionally regarded as a stone of connection, its thread read as symbolic of a bond that survives repeated strain.

The thread forms through repeated rupture and self-healing as the host fissure slowly widens, trapping gas and liquid inclusions along each fracture line as fresh silica seals it.
