Despite the name, there is no diamond here. This is quartz, called a diamond for its brilliance and named for Herkimer County, New York. Its story starts roughly 500 million years ago, when a shallow sea deposited carbonate sediments that hardened into the Little Falls dolostone. Acidic groundwater later dissolved cavities into that rock, silica rich fluid worked its way in, and quartz crystallized slowly inside those pockets, suspended and hardly touching the walls. Unconstrained on every side, it formed points at both ends instead of the usual one. Every face on this stone is natural.
