Can you wear a Herkimer as jewellery? Plenty of people do, and this size is a favourite among wire wrappers for exactly that reason, since a double terminated crystal gives you two natural anchor points and needs no drilling or faceting to look finished. A closer look

The name is a nickname, not a classification. This is quartz, called a diamond for its brilliance, and called Herkimer for the county in upstate New York that produces the real thing. Its geometry goes back roughly 500 million years, to a shallow sea whose carbonate sediments hardened into the Little Falls dolostone. Acidic groundwater dissolved cavities into that rock, silica rich fluid worked in, and quartz crystallized inside those sealed pockets slowly and nearly free floating. With no attachment holding one end, terminations formed at both, and every facet on this stone arrived that way underground.

Living with your Herkimer Diamond

It suits a setting as readily as a shelf. Wrap it, keep it in a pocket for clear headed days, rest it on the brow in stillness, or place it as the centre of a small grid with its points facing out. Each crystal comes from a natural batch, so yours will differ a little in outline and internal detail from the photographs, which is simply what uncut stones do. Quartz is hard and water safe, so rinse and dry on a soft cloth. Keep it away from harder gems so the terminations stay crisp.
