Herkimer Diamond 15mm — Wide Double Terminated NY Quartz

A noticeable step up in build, this Herkimer Diamond runs about 10mm across and 15mm tall, with a broader waist than the smaller grades and a weight of 1.6 to 1.8g. That extra width matters more than the numbers suggest, because a wider body holds more internal space for light, and the bright reflective faces catch it from almost any angle. Both ends terminate naturally in points, the double terminated signature of quartz grown loose inside a rock cavity.

How do you know a Herkimer is really a Herkimer? It is a fair question, because double terminated quartz turns up in Afghanistan, Pakistan, China and Norway too, and it often gets sold under the Herkimer name regardless. Strictly, only crystals from Herkimer County, New York earn it, and these are genuinely from there. Traditionally they are stones of clarity and attunement, tied to the crown and third eye chakras, and valued as amplifiers that brighten whatever crystal keeps them company.

A closer look

The stone itself is quartz, not diamond, and the geology behind its shape is worth knowing. Around 500 million years ago a shallow sea covered what is now upstate New York, laying down sediments that hardened into the Little Falls dolostone. Acidic groundwater later dissolved cavities into that rock. Silica rich fluid found its way in and quartz crystallized inside those pockets very slowly, suspended in solution and barely touching the walls. With no attachment point to interrupt it, the crystal grew a full set of faces at each end, roughly eighteen in total. Nothing was cut, ground, or polished.

Living with your Herkimer Diamond
