These are quartz, not diamond, nicknamed for their brilliance. The shape comes down to how they grew. Roughly 500 million years ago a shallow sea deposited the carbonate sediments that hardened into the Little Falls dolostone of upstate New York. Acidic groundwater later dissolved cavities into that rock, silica rich fluid worked its way in, and quartz crystallized inside those sealed pockets very slowly, suspended and hardly touching the walls. With no attachment point at either end, a complete termination formed on both. Ordinary quartz cannot do this, because one end is always fused to its host.
