A Tibetan Dzi bead, 36mm long, etched into natural agate following a tradition that stretches back well over two thousand years across the Tibetan plateau.
Is a Dzi bead actually carved, in the sense of material being cut away? Not quite, and it is worth understanding the real technique, since it differs from ordinary stone carving. The pattern comes from an etching and dyeing process, areas of the agate are masked, the exposed surface is treated with an alkaline solution, and heat sets a dark colour into the stone's structure before the mask is removed to reveal the lighter pattern underneath. The word dzi itself means brightness or splendour in Tibetan, and the beads are sometimes called Heaven's Beads. Traditionally worn as protective amulets against negative energy, they are treasured as family heirlooms passed down across generations.
A closer look
Agate is a banded form of chalcedony, itself a microcrystalline variety of quartz, hard enough at 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale to hold fine detail for centuries. The etching technique used on old and antique Dzi beads is genuinely difficult to reproduce exactly today, since much of the original process was never written down and workshops historically guarded their methods closely.
- Stone: Natural agate, etched Dzi bead

- Origin: Tibetan tradition
Wearing your Dzi bead
Dzi beads are traditionally worn close to the body, strung as a pendant or threaded through a mala. Agate is hard and water safe, so a rinse and a soft cloth keeps it looking its best, and the surface will naturally take on a soft, waxy sheen with years of handling.
