A goniatite fossil from Morocco, 150mm and 544g, its natural stone matrix revealing the spiral shell and internal suture lines of a marine cephalopod that lived roughly 390 million years ago.

How do you actually tell a goniatite apart from a true ammonite, given how often the two names get used loosely for similar looking fossils? The real answer is in the suture lines, the wavy pattern formed where the shell's internal walls meet its outer surface, visible once a specimen is cut or polished. Goniatites show a simpler, angular zigzag pattern of smooth lobes and saddles, while true ammonites, which appeared later and lasted through the Cretaceous, developed far more elaborate, fern like sutures. Goniatites represent an earlier, simpler stage in the same evolutionary lineage, distinctions Morocco's fossil trade doesn't always bother making but which genuinely matter to paleontologists. Beyond the science, these fossils are informally linked to grounding and stability.

A closer look

Goniatites were ammonoid cephalopods, an extinct group related to the modern nautilus. This specimen was recovered from Devonian marine limestone in Morocco, its spiral pattern and chamber lines preserved in the surrounding rock exactly as the animal left them.

  • Fossil: Goniatite, ammonoid cephalopod
  • Age: Devonian, approximately 390 million years old
  • Size: 150mm x 120mm x 25mm
  • Weight: 544g
  • Origin: Morocco

Living with your goniatite fossil

Displayed in good light, the suture pattern and spiral chambers show clearly, so a shelf or desk with natural light suits this piece well. A soft, dry cloth is all the care a polished fossil like this needs.

Please note: this is a natural fossil specimen and not a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Keep small pieces away from young children.
