This Dioptase Specimen is an unusual find: emerald-green crystals have formed naturally on both the front and the back of the host rock, so there are genuinely two faces to appreciate rather than one. At 43mm wide and just 8mm deep, it has a slim, almost interactive quality, made to be turned in the hand or rotated on a stand so both sides catch the light.
People often ask what makes Dioptase that particular shade of vivid green. The colour comes from copper within the mineral itself, the same element responsible for the blue-green of turquoise and malachite, formed here in the copper-rich oxidation zones of Namibia's Tsumeb Mine. That mine closed for good between 1998 and 2006, so material like this is a finite piece of mining history rather than something still being extracted today.
Why double-sided matters
Most Dioptase specimens show crystals on a single face, with the reverse left as plain matrix. Here, the mineral grew on both surfaces, which is a genuinely less common outcome and gives the piece real depth for anyone building a serious collection. A question that comes up often with Dioptase is whether the colour is treated in any way: it isn't, the saturation is entirely natural and comes straight from the copper content, nothing dyed or enhanced.

Displaying your specimen
Because both faces carry crystal growth, this piece is best set upright on a small stand or in a glass cabinet where it can be turned rather than left flat against a shelf. Many collectors treat Dioptase as a quiet heart-chakra piece for a reading nook or meditation corner. It's a delicate mineral, so keep it away from knocks, avoid submerging it in water, and handle it by the edges rather than the crystal faces.
Please note: crystals are not a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Keep small pieces away from young children.
