A closer look

That floating glow has a proper name, adularescence, and it isn't a colour in the stone at all. There's no blue pigment in moonstone. The layers inside scatter short wavelengths back at your eye, which is the same reason the sky reads blue, so the effect shifts depending on where the light sits and where you stand. Traditionally moonstone is a stone of intuition, new beginnings and emotional steadiness, often given at the start of something, and it's the modern June birthstone.

Wearing your moonstone bracelet

Feldspar is softer than quartz, roughly 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale, and it has natural cleavage planes, meaning a sharp knock in the wrong direction can chip a bead where a quartz would shrug it off. Nothing to worry about in ordinary wear, but treat it as jewellery rather than something to garden in. Take it off before showering, keep it away from household cleaners, and wipe it with a soft damp cloth. Store it on its own so harder beads can't scuff the facets, and the sheen stays crisp for years.
