Blue Aragonite Cluster 127mm — Raw Coral Like Specimen

This blue aragonite cluster grows the way coral does, in long straight branches rising vertically with clean separation between them, and that resemblance is not a coincidence. Aragonite is one of two common forms of calcium carbonate, and it happens to be the exact mineral that corals build their skeletons from, along with most mollusc shells. So a piece that looks like a fragment of reef is, chemically speaking, made of the same stuff. This one measures 127 mm tall and weighs 164 g, raw and unpolished, with the pale sky blue that makes the branching read so clearly.

A fair question for anyone shopping this material, since the market is genuinely murky: is blue aragonite dyed? A great deal of it is. Bright blue and pink chunks sold cheaply are usually white aragonite that has been colour treated. Naturally blue aragonite does exist, though, and it comes from a small number of places in more muted, swirling tones. This specimen is from the Wenshan Mine in Yunnan, China, one of the recognised sources, where the blue comes from trace copper in the stone itself.

Collectors tend to judge a branching aragonite on separation and vertical interest, meaning how distinctly the individual arms stand apart rather than fusing into a mass. This one does well on both counts, which is what makes it a cabinet piece rather than a shelf filler. It is worth knowing that it takes light beautifully: backlit or lit from above in a case, the translucency along the thinner branches comes alive. In crystal tradition blue aragonite is linked with the throat chakra, with calm, patience and gentler communication, a quieter reputation than the high energy stones.

Living with your aragonite

Handle this one more carefully than a quartz. Aragonite is soft, roughly 3.5 to 4 on the Mohs scale, and those fine branches are the vulnerable part, so lift it by the base rather than the arms. Being a carbonate, it reacts to acids, which rules out water, vinegar and every household cleaner. Dust it with a dry soft brush instead. Keep it out of a bathroom, where humidity works against it over time, and it will hold its colour and structure indefinitely in a display case.
