Green Opalized Shell Fossil — Rare Coober Pedy Find

This Opalized Shell from Coober Pedy began its life as a marine shell millions of years ago, slowly replaced by precious opal as silica-rich water filled its structure, preserving its shape while turning it into shimmering colour. Under different light, it shifts through shades of green and blue, the clean, bright play-of-colour Coober Pedy opal is known for.

Why does an opalized fossil form so rarely? The process takes 50 to over 100 million years, as opal fills the exact space once occupied by the shell's own material, preserving its texture and form rather than simply coating it. Only a handful of regions in the world produce these, with Coober Pedy the most iconic, which is why opalized shells sit in museum collections as often as private ones.
