What actually causes the star to appear, and why does it only show under certain light? The effect is called asterism, and it comes from extremely fine, needle-like mineral inclusions aligned within the crystal in three directions that intersect at 60 degree angles, the same inclusions responsible for the stone's pink colour in the first place. Under diffuse daylight the star is invisible entirely, but a single concentrated light source reflecting off those aligned needles produces six clean rays that shift and move as the sphere turns, best seen exactly this way, polished into a ball rather than any other shape. Rose quartz is the enduring stone of unconditional love, and Madagascar material in particular is prized for a richer, more saturated pink than the paler quartz found elsewhere.

Living with your star rose quartz

Keep a small torch or penlight nearby, since shining it directly into the sphere from behind or above is the reliable way to bring the star into view, ordinary room light will not show it.
