Large Pietersite Sphere 114mm — Rare Tempest Stone Collector

A large pietersite sphere, 114mm across and 2.8 kilograms, in one of the genuinely rare gemstones of the mineral world. Pietersite's swirling blues, golds, and earth tones shift and catch the light as the sphere turns, an effect so reminiscent of a storm in motion that the stone earned the trade name Tempest Stone. It's associated with transformation, courage, and the third eye chakra.

What makes pietersite different from tiger's eye or hawk's eye, which it superficially resembles? Direction. Tiger's eye and hawk's eye have chatoyant fibres running in neat parallel lines, producing an orderly, uniform shimmer. Pietersite is brecciated, meaning its fibres were broken up and re-cemented by geological stress, so the chatoyancy runs in every direction at once. That chaos is precisely what makes it so striking, and it's genuinely uncommon in the gem world.

A closer look at this specimen

Pietersite was discovered in 1962 by Sid Pieters while prospecting near Outjo in Namibia, and registered with British mineralogical authorities two years later. It forms through an unusually complex process: fibrous crocidolite is broken apart by tectonic stress, infiltrated by silica-rich groundwater, and gradually replaced by quartz while retaining the fibrous structure that produces the shimmer. The conditions required are rare enough that only two significant sources are known worldwide, Namibia and China, with Namibian material generally showing the strongest blue chatoyancy.

Displaying your sphere

This wants a sturdy stand and a spot where it can be turned and viewed from multiple angles, since the chatoyancy genuinely changes depending on how light strikes it. Side lighting or a directional lamp brings out the storm-like movement far better than flat overhead light. Pietersite is a quartz-family stone and reasonably hard-wearing, though a sphere this weight should always be lifted with both hands. A dry soft cloth maintains the polish.
