Why does calcite specifically produce visible rainbow flashes so readily compared to many other minerals? Calcite has an unusually strong optical property called birefringence, splitting light into two separate rays as it passes through the crystal structure, and where thin internal fractures or cleavage planes interact with that effect, the result is a genuine rainbow flash rather than anything added or coated on. Honey calcite is traditionally associated with confidence, motivation, and personal growth.

Calcite is a carbonate mineral, softer than quartz, and its warm honey colouring comes from trace iron oxide within the crystal structure. Because each sphere's internal fractures are unique, no two show quite the same rainbow pattern.

Living with your honey calcite

Calcite is genuinely soft, around 3 on the Mohs scale, softer than most crystals in a typical collection, so handle it gently and keep it away from harder stones that could scratch its surface. A soft, dry cloth is the safest way to clean it; avoid acidic cleaners, which can etch calcite's surface.
