A Tsumeb dioptase specimen, 47mm and 33.3g, vibrant emerald green crystals distributed across a substantial matrix, balancing crystal rich areas against exposed natural rock.

Is dioptase actually safe to have around the house, given its copper content? In ordinary handling, yes, simply touching or displaying a specimen like this poses no real risk. The caution that does apply is around cutting or grinding the material, where fine copper bearing dust can be genuinely harmful if inhaled or ingested, which is why lapidaries working dioptase wear protective masks. For a raw display specimen, sensible handling, a wash of the hands afterward, keeping it away from young children who might put it in their mouth, and skipping any use as a direct water elixir, covers what is actually needed. Dioptase is traditionally linked to heart centred energy and emotional renewal.

A closer look

This specimen was mined at the Tsumeb Mine in Namibia's Otjikoto Region between 1998 and 2006, during the final production era of one of the most historically significant mineral localities in the world. The vivid green colour comes from copper within the dioptase crystal structure itself, formed through a specific alkaline oxidation process considerably less common than the reactions that typically produce malachite or azurite.

  • Stone: Dioptase, natural copper cyclosilicate
  • Form: Crystal specimen on matrix
  • Size: 47mm x 31mm x 26mm
  • Weight: 33.3g
  • Origin: Tsumeb Mine, Otjikoto Region, Namibia, mined 1998–2006

Living with your dioptase

Wash your hands after handling this raw specimen and keep it away from young children, who should never be left alone with small mineral pieces. A shelf or display cabinet with good light lets the emerald crystals show at their best.

Please note: crystals are not a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Keep small pieces away from young children.
