Substantial raw ruby rocks in large and medium sizes, unpolished and unshaped, offered as three separate specimens weighing from about a pound up to well over two. These are the kind of pieces that anchor a display rather than sit among it. Ruby is the long-standing stone of vitality and courage, working at the root and heart chakras, and at this scale it makes a genuine statement in a room.

Why choose rough over a polished piece? Partly cost, since a rough stone of this weight is far more attainable than a finished one, but mostly character. Polishing removes the outer surface where the crystal's actual growth history is written, the natural faces, the matrix it grew against, the texture of the rock around it. Collectors and energy workers often prefer rough for exactly that reason, wanting the stone as the earth shaped it.

A closer look at these specimens

Ruby is a variety of corundum, and its red comes from a trace of chromium sitting in the crystal structure where aluminium would otherwise be. That chromium is relatively scarce in the earth's crust, which is the honest reason fine ruby is uncommon rather than any story about rarity. Corundum forms under heat and pressure in metamorphic rock, and at this size you're often seeing ruby together with the host material it grew within, which is part of what gives a rough specimen its presence.

Displaying your ruby

Give a stone this size a solid surface and a bit of space, since it reads best when nothing crowds it. A lamp set low and to one side brings out the depth in the red better than overhead light. These also work well as the anchor stone in a crystal grid, or simply held during meditation if you can manage the weight. Dust with a soft dry brush and skip cleaners, which can leave residue in the natural texture. A UV torch is worth trying, since chromium often makes ruby glow red in the dark.

Please note: crystals are not a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Keep small pieces away from young children.
