Aragonite is a polymorph of calcium carbonate, chemically identical to calcite but crystallizing in a different lattice structure that produces its characteristic acicular, fibrous, and botryoidal growth habits rather than calcite's typical blocky forms. Aragonite is technically less stable than calcite over geological time, which makes well-preserved specimens like this genuinely interesting from a mineralogical standpoint as well as a decorative one.
