About this specimen

Morganite is a pink variety of beryl, the same mineral family that includes emerald and aquamarine, with its soft colour coming from trace manganese within the stone. It was first identified in Madagascar in 1910 and named the following year by the gemologist George Kunz, working for Tiffany & Co., in honour of the financier J.P. Morgan, a passionate gem collector himself, a name that has stuck ever since despite morganite's origins as a simple pink variety of beryl.
