A large blue aragonite specimen, 3.75 pounds and genuinely sculptural, from the Wenshan region of Yunnan, China, one of the very few localities in the world producing aragonite in this soft, natural blue. The formation here is part botryoidal, part fibrous, giving it real depth and a luminous, almost oceanic quality that's distinctive to this specific deposit. Blue aragonite is closely tied to the throat and heart chakras, associated with calm communication and emotional healing.

What makes Wenshan aragonite specifically collectible? The blue colour, which comes from trace copper picked up during formation, appears in only a small handful of deposits worldwide, and the mountain-like, layered growth this locality produces is genuinely distinctive within the aragonite family. A specimen at this scale, showing both the colour and the structural complexity clearly, represents real geological rarity rather than just size.

A closer look at this specimen

Aragonite is a polymorph of calcium carbonate, chemically identical to calcite but built on a different crystal lattice that produces its characteristic needle-like and botryoidal growth rather than calcite's blockier habits. It forms in low-temperature hydrothermal environments, the conditions responsible for the layered, mountain-like texture visible here. This piece is entirely natural, not treated or dyed.
