What separates a "master crystal" from an ordinary Lemurian point? Size and clarity both play a role, but it largely comes down to the length and consistency of the striations themselves. "Lemurian" is a trade name rather than a mineral classification, first applied to elongated, striated quartz points found loose in the sandy soil of the Serra do Cabral region of Minas Gerais in the late 1990s. The striations themselves have a straightforward geological explanation, growth lines left behind as the crystal alternated between faster and slower phases while forming in a silica rich hydrothermal pocket. A crystal of this size took considerably longer to grow than a small point, which is part of why larger, cleanly striated specimens command a premium.
