Are those white flecks painted on? Not remotely, and the real answer is more interesting. Obsidian is volcanic glass, formed when lava cools so fast that no minerals get a chance to crystallize. But given enough time, patches inside the glass slowly begin to crystallize after all, and a silica mineral called cristobalite grows outward in tiny radiating clusters. Those clusters are the snowflakes. The black between them is still pure glass.

That makes snowflake obsidian a genuine oddity, a volcanic glass caught partway through becoming a crystal. No two spheres carry the same pattern, since the flecks vary from delicate and widely scattered to dense and clustered depending on how the material sat underground. This one is natural throughout, undyed and untreated. In crystal tradition it's linked to the third eye chakra and read as a stone of light and dark held in balance, which suits the look of it rather neatly.

Living with your sphere

Clean it with a dry soft cloth, since the polish is what makes the snowflakes visible.
