Mahogany Obsidian Sphere 2lb — 3.5 Inch Volcanic Root Stone

A single mahogany obsidian sphere at 88mm across and a full 900 grams, right on the 2-pound mark. Warm reddish-brown flows through deep volcanic black in bands that wrap the whole surface, polished to a clean even shine. It's a satisfying weight to pick up, and the earthy colouring makes it far easier to place in a living room than a stone that reads as flatly black.

Mahogany obsidian is the grounding member of the obsidian family, connected to the root and sacral chakras. Where black obsidian has a reputation for being confronting and snowflake obsidian for being gentle, this one is usually described as fortifying, the stone for building strength and moving an intention into actual action. It's also associated with protection and with clearing what feels stagnant.

A closer look at this specimen

Obsidian is volcanic glass, formed when lava cools too fast for crystals to grow inside it. The brown here comes from oxidized iron, largely hematite, caught in the melt and spread unevenly through the glass, which is exactly why the banding is different on every piece. Nothing is dyed and nothing is heat-treated. Because the colouring runs right through the stone rather than sitting on the surface, the pattern you see is genuinely structural.

Living with your sphere

A stand or shallow dish keeps it in place, and it looks particularly good on wood or against a light wall where the brown has something to play off. It's a comfortable size to hold during meditation, heavy enough to feel steadying without being awkward. Obsidian chips more readily than most stones of similar weight, so set it down gently and keep it clear of hard edges. Dust with a dry soft cloth and skip cleaning products entirely.
