How does cat's-eye quartz actually produce that effect, and is it the same thing as tiger's eye? The mechanism is related but genuinely different. Tiger's eye forms when fibrous crocidolite is completely replaced by quartz through pseudomorphism, leaving a banded, largely opaque stone. True cat's-eye quartz instead retains intact or only partially altered fibrous inclusions, commonly crocidolite or related amphibole fibers, still sitting within a quartz host that grew around them rather than replacing them entirely. That difference in structure is what gives cat's-eye quartz its sharper, more mobile single band of light rather than tiger's eye's broader, silkier sheen. This stone is traditionally associated with the heart chakra, linked to calm, compassion, and clearer emotional judgement.

A closer look

For the effect to show at all, the fibrous inclusions need to run parallel to each other and the stone needs to be cut so those fibers sit parallel to the surface, which a sphere naturally achieves from every angle as it's turned. Each sphere will show the band a little differently depending on how its particular inclusions are arranged, which is part of the natural variation in this material.

Living with your cat's-eye quartz
