Why does dragon design differ between Japanese and Chinese carving traditions? The two share the same mythic root but diverge in form. Japanese dragons, as carved here, are typically drawn with a slimmer, more serpentine body and often three claws, reflecting the version of the dragon that travelled from China to Japan and was adapted there over centuries. The Chinese dragon tends to be depicted with a heavier, more sinuous coil and traditionally five claws for imperial imagery. Both traditions treat the dragon as a symbol of power, good luck, wisdom, and longevity.

The carving is worked from a single piece of natural clear quartz with no inclusions, meaning the rough had to be entirely flawless before a single cut was made, since any internal crack or cloudy patch would show through the finished piece and likely cause it to fail during carving. Quartz has been carved into ritual and decorative objects since the Han dynasty in China, prized for both its clarity and its hardness, which allows fine detail to hold up over time far better than softer stones.
