How can three "quartz" stones look and behave so differently? It comes down to what happened to the silicon dioxide while it was forming. Rutilated quartz grew around fine titanium mineral needles, trapping them mid formation and earning its reputation as a natural amplifier. Smoky quartz darkened through natural background radiation acting on trace aluminium in the crystal lattice, giving it a long association with grounding and easing anxiety. Clear quartz formed without either influence, staying colourless and widely regarded as a master healer and blank slate for intention. A closer look

Rutilated quartz contains rutile, a titanium mineral that crystallized as fine needles before quartz grew around it and sealed the pattern permanently. Smoky quartz is coloured through a well understood natural process, irradiation interacting with aluminium impurities in the crystal structure, distinct from the artificial irradiation sometimes used to darken other quartz varieties. Clear quartz is the purest form of the mineral, silicon dioxide with essentially no colouring impurities at all.
