Is mystique quartz a naturally occurring stone? Not in its final colour, and it is worth being upfront about that. Mystique quartz, also called mystic or rainbow quartz, starts life as ordinary clear quartz, which is then bonded with a microscopically thin layer of metal, commonly titanium, through a permanent high-vacuum coating process. The result is a genuinely striking iridescent surface that will not wash off or wear away, but it is a treatment rather than a colour the crystal grew with. Traditionally, once treated, the stone is associated with joy, positivity, and protection, while the untreated clear quartz beads alongside it carry the older reputation as an amplifier of energy and intention.

A closer look

The coating process is broadly the same one used for aura quartz and mystic topaz, chemical vapour deposition, where metal is vaporised inside a vacuum chamber and bonds molecularly to the stone's surface. Because the bond is molecular rather than a surface paint or dye, it holds up far better than most colour treatments, though the base material underneath remains ordinary clear quartz, just as hard and just as durable as it always was.

Wearing your bracelet
