Shungite is a rare carbon-rich rock found almost exclusively near Shunga, Russia, notable among minerals for containing fullerenes, unusual carbon molecules, and for being over a billion years old, among the oldest material sold in the crystal trade. Tiger's eye is a variety of quartz that has replaced fibrous crocidolite asbestos through a slow process called pseudomorphism, which is what produces its signature chatoyancy, the shifting band of light that moves across the stone as it turns.

Wearing your bracelet

Tiger's eye is a hard quartz variety and holds up well to daily wear, sitting around 7 on the Mohs scale. Shungite is softer and can rub a faint grey residue onto skin or fabric when new, particularly with warmth and friction, which fades with wear and is easily rinsed off. A soft cloth and the occasional rinse keeps both stones looking their best.
