Black tourmaline is a boron silicate mineral, taking its jet black colour from iron within a genuinely complex crystal structure. Citrine is a variety of quartz coloured by trace iron, and the great majority sold commercially today is heat-treated amethyst, since natural citrine of this colour is genuinely uncommon. Tiger's eye forms as fibrous crocidolite is gradually replaced by quartz, a process called pseudomorphism, which is responsible for the stone's signature chatoyancy, the band of light that shifts as it turns.
