Rutilated Quartz Magatama — Golden Rutile Japanese Charm

A magatama (勾玉), the comma shaped bead at the heart of one of Japan's oldest jewellery traditions, carved here from golden rutilated quartz rather than the jade most magatama are traditionally made from. The curved silhouette is instantly recognisable, and the golden rutile threads running through the clear quartz body catch the light differently at every angle as the shape turns. It measures 35mm long and 20mm thick.

How old is the magatama shape, really? Considerably older than a thousand years, and that is worth getting right. Archaeological finds place the earliest curved beads in the Jomon period, with the form flourishing from roughly 1000 BCE through the Kofun period into the 6th century CE, a span of well over two thousand years before it became the ceremonial jewel Japan knows today. Early magatama were carved from local stone and earthenware; by the end of the Kofun period, jade had become the material of choice, and the magatama had shifted from personal ornament to a symbol of status and the sacred. It remains one of the Three Sacred Treasures of the Japanese imperial regalia alongside the sword and the mirror.

A closer look

The golden threads running through this piece are rutile, a titanium mineral that crystallized as fine needles before the quartz around it sealed the pattern permanently in place. Rutilated quartz brings its own associations to a magatama carved from it, traditionally linked to clarity, amplified energy, and protection, sitting alongside the magatama's older symbolism of guarding against harm and connecting the wearer to something larger than themselves.

Living with your magatama

A magatama is traditionally worn or kept close as a protective charm rather than displayed at a distance, so a cord around the neck or a spot on a personal altar both suit its history well. Quartz is hard and water safe, so a rinse and a soft cloth is all the care it needs. Store it away from harder stones so the curved surface stays smooth and unmarked.
